Alma Mater

The very first day of high school your head is embedded with the Alma Mater of your school so you will hopefully know it for the day you graduate. In my high school we sang it after every football game, pep rally, assembly, and every other sport event there was hosted at school. It was something we had to learn by our freshman year so we could sing along with the upperclassman. The alma mater holds different significance for every school and all are written differently. The original alma mater at Greenville Senior High School was changed in 2022 from “Dixi Land” to “Hearts Belong” and it was a very controversial decision that was made.

This video is about the principle, Mr. Warren, explains why it was changed and the importance of the alma mater for Greenville Senior High.

At the very end of the graduation the alma mater will play at you can hear everyone singing and swaying along to the song. The alma mater meant a lot to my high school and still does to this day. For one reason because my high school is one of the oldest schools that have been around greenville and the song represents the history throughout the school.

By definition of https://web.saumag.edu/archives/archives/history/alma-maters/ says the alma mater to lyrically expressing the loyalty to ones school originated in England. Alma maters shows gratitude to the school and the history behind it in a song version written like a poem.

This video explains where the very first alma mater was made at and the history behind the following schools that created their own song.

  3. I found this interesting. At my high school we never really practiced or memorized our alma matter. I think the way they did this at your school was 100 percent right. Even though you changed your alma matter I think its cool that you sing it at graduation and during football games.
