The Tango of Argentina is a combination of flamenco, polka and African dances that is very important to Argentina. The Tango originated in Buenos Aires in the 18th century and has become one of the most famous dances in the world. The tango is important because it brought together European immigrants, Argentinian indigenous people and former slaves. It is known to have shaped Argentina culture and its society. Due to prohibition and dictatorships the dance was considered illegal and was forced underground before it came back out in the 1980’s. The Tango is known to have a strong repetitive rhythm like a pulse. The music was so popular because there was a large range of music and could be played all through the night. The focus of the actual dance part of the tango is to match the speed and emotion of the music with improvised steps in between. It is danced by two people, usually one male and one female. It can be more open like the leader and the follower dance at arms length or...

Music and Family

The person that I chose to interview was my mother. She was born in the late 1960’s and grew up in the time where music was up roaring. Her dad worked long hours on the railroads and her mom was a seamstress that worked from home with her and her sister. My mom grew up with a sister that she was not that close with in age. She has grown up going to all sorts of different concerts and listening to many different genres of music. She said that her earliest memory of music was the songs her dad used to listen to on the radio, typically old school country. She also mentioned that the tv was rarely on, but if it was it would typically be showing old time country shows that had instruments like the banjo. When I asked her about who and what music she listened to growing up and going into high school she said “Madonna was always on in my car as well as George Micheal”. For her when she listened to music it was either in the car, or on the radio in the wall at her house and friends house...

Country Music

Gencie Coan  Dr. Vaneman  Music and Culture  1 April 2023  Country Music  Country music has grown over the past 100 years very rapidly and has now grown into one of the most listened to genres around the world. Although the style of country music has changed now it will always be from the same background and it all got started the same way in the early 1900’s. In today's world, country music has been turned more towards the pop side and not just hillbilly’s singing with just the guitar and banjo anymore. From the border of the Appalachian mountains in Virginia and Tennessee, where it first came from to the streets of Nashville where it is most known today, country music has grown widely across America and even the world and for all different types of listeners. The creation of country music would be pulled out of Irish fiddle songs and adding English ballads to make the words that are in the song. There are many different instruments that have been played...

Music and Gender

Image
Something that first came to mind when I thought about gender in music was country radio. When people think of country they think of either old time southern country or new modern day singers but the first people that come to their mind when thinking about the singers is men. For example if you were thinking about old music generally it was all country men singing about the west and women and alcohol  like the singer George Strait. If they were thinking about todays music usually the first person coming to mind would be Morgan Wallen or Zach Bryan. Kitty Wells was the very first country singer to perform in the 1950s. No one is thinking about her when country comes to mind or even listen to her on the radio when listing to classic country.  This is Kitty Wells most popular song “It wasn’t God who made the Honky Tonk”. She had many more famous songs but this is the one people will remember. If you can see in the background it is mostly men playing the guitar and some wom...

Alma Mater

Image
The very first day of high school your head is embedded with the Alma Mater of your school so you will hopefully know it for the day you graduate. In my high school we sang it after every football game, pep rally, assembly, and every other sport event there was hosted at school. It was something we had to learn by our freshman year so we could sing along with the upperclassman. The alma mater holds different significance for every school and all are written differently. The original alma mater at Greenville Senior High School was changed in 2022 from “Dixi Land” to “Hearts Belong” and it was a very controversial decision that was made. This video is about the principle, Mr. Warren, explains why it was changed and the importance of the alma mater for Greenville Senior High.    At the very end of the graduation the alma mater will play at you can hear everyone singing and swaying along to the song. The alma mater meant a lot to my high school and still does t...

Hello everybody! My name is Gencie Coan and I am a freshman here at Converse University. I play lacrosse for the school and I have been playing since I was in 4th grades. I am born and raised in Greenville South Carolina. I do not know much about music or the history and culture behind it so I am exited to learn more! I am a child and family studies major and hopefully to minor in psychology. I have 2 older brothers who both play sports. Judd, 19, plays basketball in Florida and Lucas, 24, played baseball at Erskine. I love animals especially my dog, Stella. She is a black lab mixed with a pit bull and she loves going to the beach just like I do. This is just a little things about my life and me!  1. One example of something I am into at the moment is Zach Bryans music. I have liked his music for about a year now and I am going to his concert in May so I am listening and learning a bunch of his new and old songs. He is a newer country artist. The first song he e...
